An Introduction to the Telegraph
The telegraph was an invention from Samuel Morse, from whom morse
code is named after. Morse code was the "language" used throughout the use of the telegraph. Morse code is really just a compilation of dots and dashes used to convey letters, which make up words, which make up sentences, ect.. The telegraph was heavily used by the Union in the time frame of the civil war. Lincoln capitalized on the telegraph more than others. He used it to its full military capabilities, communicating with front lines constantly to thwart the south, at which he was obviously succesful.
The telegraph was a long line of electrical wire raised by a post. It often covered hundreds of miles, between the two stations. The telegraph operation stations, at each end of the wire, held an operator who recieved and created coded messages. They had a device which they pressed with their finger, turning the current of electricity on. They used these clicks as the only means of telegraph communication.
