Telegraph
In 1848, the amount of telegraph line in the United States totaled three thousand miles. In 1850, two years later, there were twenty-two thousand miles of telegraph line, and in 1860 there were over fifty thousand miles of telegraph line, over ten thousand telegraph operators and fourteen hundred telegraph stations. This shows the exponential growth which the telegraph would experience.
Five million messages were sent annually by telegraph, which produced two million dollars in revenues. The press added two hundred thousand dollars to the annual revenue.
In 1860, it was released to the public that there was a telegraph line running along the coast of New York to New Jersey. That line was later proven to be defectitve. After this, the public believed that the telegraph was in its infancy.
